Libertà/ Liberazione - Liberty/ Liberation

Una delle parole più abusate del mondo contemporaneo è la parola libertà.

L’equivoco si fonda su un dato elementare: la libertà (vedi post) è un fatto di cui abbiamo bisogno come di pane. Così parto da due scritte sui muri della mia città. Una piccola città  piccolo – borghese, ma guarda che cosa succede sui muri, in un giorno qualunque.

One of the most abused words in the contemporary world is the word liberty.

The misunderstanding dwells over an elementary fact: liberty is as necessary to our life as bread (see post below). Therefore, let me start over from my city walls - a small, petite-bourgeois town, but take a look at what happens on the walls, on an ordinary day.

 

Arbeit Macht Frei. Devo rileggere, appena lo vedo. Il lavoro rende liberi. Verissimo, ma brandito come una spada in una delle più gravi aberrazioni dell'umanità che la storia conosca. Graffiato sui muri di una città.

Arbeit Macht Frei. I must re-read it, as soon as I see it. Work sets free. The truest of statements, yet brandished as a sword along one of the direst aberrations of humanity that History is aware of. Scratched on city walls.

Pochi metri più in là. Una vecchia traccia di un rifugio per le bombe in città, segno del fatto che anche qui è stato fronte di guerra. Ma sotto qualcuno ha aggiunto una frase in bianco. Ho avuto paura di andare a vedere se fosse gesso, perchè non volevo cancellarla, neanche per sbaglio.

Libertas bonum magnum vitae. La libertà è il bene supremo della vita.

In questo mese sono andata in cerca di libertà. Ne ho trovata. Ve la porterò.

 A few steps away. Old signs of a war refuge in town, as an evidence that the war front was passing here. But someone added some white words underneath. I was afraid to go there to see if it was chalk, because I didn't want to erase it, not even accidentally.

Libertas bonum magnum vitae. Freedom is the supreme good in life.

This past month I set off looking for freedom. I found it. I'm gonna carry you some.

Ma se penso alla libertà mi s'impone una domanda ancora più urgente. Cos'è che permette la liberazione? Perchè la vera questione non è riempirsi la bocca di parole, ma sapere verso dove camminare. Nel mondo occidentale, barattiamo la libertà con democrazia e possibilità di consumare.Che cos'è che ci rende liberi?

But, thinking of freedom, an even more urgent demand arises. What allows liberation?

'Cause the real matter isn't about filling one's mouth with words, but knowing towards where you're walking.

In the Western worlds, we are bartering our liberty with democracy and the chance to be consuming things. What sets us free?
